Aram Espresso Maker recipe
When I first saw the Aram espresso maker, I fell in love with the aesthetics of it and the material choices that were chosen to be used. The wood and steel combination of this tool is what I would call “Eye candy”. The method of applying pressure to the coffee puck using a screw and a handle to push a piston down caught my interest and curiosity, so I decided to play with different brewing styles and landed on this following recipe. I am happy to share with you my go to recipe for an espresso made using the Aram tool.
Equipments and tools you need
- heating water kettle.
- Aram espresso Maker.
- Tamper (included in the box).
- A cup to collect hot water used to get the aram up to temperature, and for your espresso beverage.
- Small scale.
- Good espresso specific roasted coffee.
Steps to brew
- Heat up water to 95 C and pour it in the top part of the aram espresso maker, and let it sit for two and a half minutes, then turn the screw counter clock wise to get it up and then screw it back down to push the water out, repeat this step one more time to get the tool up to temperature.
- use a scale to weigh out 18 grams of coffee and grind it slightly coarser than espresso.
- unscrew the bottom part of the aram espresso maker where the basket sits, and pour your coffee grinds in the basket.
- distribute the coffee as evenly and flat as possible, then use the tamper to tamp the coffee down, use medium force, no need to be excessive with the tamping, you mainly want to keep it level.
- screw the portafilter back in the bottom part of the aram espresso maker.
- pour water on the top part again until its full.
- put a scale and a cup beneath the aram espresso maker and tare the scale.
- start the timer and quickly move the handle counter clock wise to move the screw up all the way.
- once you are all the way up, and the timer hits 20 seconds, start screwing the handle back down fast until you feel resistance, at which point keep a steady pressure not too strong not too soft, and keep moving the handle down until you reach the desired weight of 36 grams of espresso beverage which should be between 50 seconds to 60 seconds.
- once you reach the desired weight, remove the cup and replace it with another to collect the remaining water to discard later.
- taste the coffee, and calibrate your grind settings from there, if it is acidic, make the grinds finer, if is bitter, make your grinds courser. A good sign of whether your grind size is correct as well is the resistance you get when screwing the handle down pressing water on the coffee puck, if the resistance is too strong, your grind size is too fine, if the resistance is too little, then your grind size is too coarse.
